The White Mask
(In this prophetic parable Jesus addresses directly a self-confident believer.)
"As I strode by you stepped into testimony, eager to appear in my presence diligent and real. The words were accurate, your knowledge strong. I observed neither fault nor error to your words.
As I gazed and as I listened, your mouth and mind were as one, but your heart was absent from your erudite presentation.
Without your realization I peeked into your heart (it really only took just a peek) and witnessed blackness covered by a white mask.
The Lord says:
"These people come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me ... "(Is 29:13)
The white mask was well used, it had concealed the darkness for a very long time. You did not even know its presence. You choose the white mask in infancy.
As you grew and learned the language of Zion, it guarded your behavior as a believer.
This white mask covered your sin and seduced your spirit. Your heart has always been one of pretence; you thought it to be one of perfection.
There is a short stalk to this white mask. This stalk acts as a handle. It is by this stalk that the mask is held in place. The hand on the mask is black. The hand is called pride.
I have this against you; your intentions appear pure, even to you -- but this I know, of this I am sure, no proud person ever entered the Kingdom of Heaven.
"So man will be brought low
and mankind humbled,
the eyes of the arrogant humbled." (Is 5:15)
I will act. I will not tolerate your pretence, nor do I delight in your deception. Your words are from me, but it is as if I do not know you.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' " (Matt 7:21-23)
Repent now for the time is short. I have so much more for you, but your white mask impedes all my good intentions, it refuses my grace."
White masks do not make a man worthy of heaven only white clothing.
